The ExFog XT is the most recommended antifog system in the airsoft community for a reason: it actually works. But "just plug it in and go" isn't quite the full picture. How you mount it, how you route the tubing, and how you connect it to your eyewear makes the difference between a clean, fog-free setup and a hassle every time you kit up.

This guide walks through the full setup process from unboxing to game-ready, with real routing paths for helmets, soft headwear, and earpro setups. If you've been running your ExFog XT on vibes and zip ties, this one's for you.


What the ExFog XT Actually Does

Before we get into setup, a quick primer for anyone new to fan-based antifog systems.

The ExFog XT is a small battery-powered fan unit that pushes air through flexible tubing into your eyewear. That continuous airflow prevents the warm, humid air from your face from condensing into fog. It's the same principle as cracking a car window — moving air doesn't fog.

Unlike wipes, sprays, or thermal lenses, the ExFog XT addresses the actual cause of mid-game fogging: body heat and sweat. It's the only category of solution that reliably works when you're running hard in high humidity. The XT model is ExFog's current generation — ultralight at 2.9 oz, with 10–13.5 hours of battery life on a built-in rechargeable LiPo and whisper-quiet variable-speed fan control.

What's in the Box

The ExFog XT Standard Kit includes:

  • ExFog XT fan unit
  • Tubing (generous length — you'll cut it to fit)

Before your first game, charge the unit fully via USB. The indicator light will confirm when it's topped off. Takes about 2 hours from empty.


Step 1: Choose Your Mounting Location

The ExFog XT mounts at the back of your headwear or helmet — this is where the unit lives, and your tubing runs forward from here to your eyepro. Getting the mount right first makes every other step easier.

Helmet with a rear pouch or velcro field: This is the cleanest option. Attach the included velcro patch to the rear of your helmet shell, or use an existing velcro field if your helmet has one. The unit sits low on the back of the helmet, out of the way of NVG mounts, cameras, or counterweights. 

Helmet without rear velcro: Add a strip of loop velcro to the rear of the helmet shell. Most helmet shells accept adhesive-backed velcro well. Alternatively, some players use an ExFog pouch mounted on the rear of the helmet.

No helmet / soft headwear (boonie, beanie, shemagh): The ExFog XT includes a headband option. Route the headband around the back of your head and position the unit at the rear. It's less stable than a hard mount but works fine for woodland and casual play. Some players add a small velcro patch to the outside of a boonie or hat for a cleaner result.

Plate carrier / chest rig: If you're not running headgear at all, the unit can mount to a rear MOLLE panel or shoulder strap. Tubing will need to run up and over your shoulder — workable, but adds routing complexity. The ExFog Headband can also be worn without other headgear to allow unit mounting in the typical position.


Step 2: Route the Tubing

This is where most setups go wrong. The goal is a clean, snag-free run from the unit at the back of your head to your eyewear at the front — with no kinks, no loose loops, and nothing that catches on branches, door frames, or your own gear.

There are three main routing paths depending on your headgear setup:

Helmet Users: Over the Shell or Through the Inside

If you're running a hard helmet, you have two clean options:

Over the outside of the helmet: Run the tubing up from the rear-mounted unit, over the top of the helmet shell, and down the front to your eyewear. Use small routing clips or velcro cable ties to keep the tubing pinned to the shell. This is the most common approach and works well with most helmet setups. The tubing stays out of your way and is secure from potential snagging.

Through the inside of the helmet: Some helmets have enough interior space to run tubing through the inside of the shell — up through the padding channels and out near the brow. This gives you a completely clean exterior look with no visible tubing on the outside of the helmet. It takes more time to set up and isn't possible with all helmet models, but it's the cleanest result if your helmet allows it. We recommend using BFly routing packs like the 90 degree pack to avoid kinks in the tubing when routing from the manifold around the bottom lip of the helmet.

No Helmet / Soft Headwear: Up and Around to the Rear

Without a hard shell to route over, the tubing runs up from the rear-mounted unit and around the sides of your head to reach your eyewear. Keep the tubing close to your head using the BFly Routing Kit or small cable clips to prevent it from flopping around during movement. Route it above your ears and forward to the lens.

Earpro Users (Peltor, Sordin, Howard Leight, etc.): Two Options

Running earpro adds a routing challenge because the earcups sit between the unit at the rear and your eyewear at the front. You have two solid options:

Option A — Inside, above the earcups: Route the tubing above the earcup on the inside — between the earpro band and your head. The tubing runs in the gap between the top of the earcup and your skull, staying inside your headset's footprint. This works well if your earcups aren't too tight against your head and you have enough clearance. It's the cleaner look of the two options.

Option B — Outside, around the earcups: Orient your clearflow adapter inserts outward or downward so the tubing exits to the outside of your eyewear frame, then route the tubing outside and around the earcups to reach the rear of your head where the unit is mounted. This is the better choice when your earcups sit tight against your head with no clearance for inside routing, or when you're running large-cup earpro like the Sordin Supreme Pro. It adds a small amount of visible tubing on the outside of your setup but is more reliable in terms of airflow and tube security.

Which option you choose depends on your specific earcup size and how tight your fit is. Try Option A first — if the tubing kinks or the earcup compresses it, switch to Option B.

Pro tip: Use the BFly Tubing Sheath to bundle and protect tubing runs on any of these paths. It keeps things tidy, prevents kinking, and gives your setup a much more finished look. If combining the sheath with routing clips, make sure to cut slits in the sheathing so the clips can secure the actual tubing to your headwear.


Step 3: Connect to Your Eyepro

How you terminate the tubing at your eyepro depends on whether you're running goggles or ballistic glasses.

Goggles: Most airsoft goggles have ports or gaps at the lens edge where you can insert the ExFog tubing directly. Route the tube ends to the lower corners of the lens where fog typically forms first. Some players use a small piece of foam or tape to direct airflow across the lens surface if the port isn't a tight fit. You can also use ExFog magnetic goggle adapters for a quick detatchable connection.

Ballistic glasses (Oakley M Frame, ESS Crossbow, UVEX Genesis, Bloc Tactical Predator): This is where things get more complicated. Ballistic glasses don't have goggle ports, and taping tubing to a glasses frame is a mess that doesn't work well and looks terrible. The Clearflow Antifog Adapter solves this — it's a frame-specific adapter that connects your ExFog tubing to your ballistic glasses with directed airflow right at the lens edge. No tape, no zip ties, no improvising.

If you're running ballistic glasses and don't have a Clearflow Adapter yet, that's the missing piece in your setup. The Clearflow Flex Connectors give you additional routing flexibility if your tubing path requires a straight input or if you want a bit of flex at the connection point.


Step 4: Dial In Your Speed Settings

The ExFog XT has variable speed control — don't just cycle it to max and leave it there. Matching fan speed to conditions extends battery life and keeps noise down.

  • Low speed: Cool weather, low humidity, low-intensity play. Enough airflow to prevent passive fogging without burning through battery.
  • Medium speed: The sweet spot for most game conditions. Handles moderate humidity and sustained movement without being audible.
  • High speed: Hot, humid conditions or high-intensity CQB where you're moving constantly and sweating hard. Use this when conditions are brutal — Florida summer, indoor CQB, milsim events with sustained exertion.

Start at medium at the beginning of the day and adjust based on conditions. If you start to see any fogging at the lens edges, bump up the speed. If you're in cool, dry conditions and battery conservation matters, drop to low.


Step 5: Secure and Dress the Tubing

Once your routing path is set and your eyewear connection is solid, lock everything down so it doesn't shift during play.

  • Use the BFly Routing Kit to anchor tubing and avoid kinks at key points along your helmet or headgear — especially anywhere the tubing changes direction or could catch on something.
  • Cover longer runs with the BFly Tubing Sheath to protect the tubing and blend it into your kit, giving your setup a clean, finished look.
  • Use Couplers if you need to join tubing sections or create a clean connection point between the unit and a longer run.
  • Replace with ExFog Replacement Tubing if your original tubing has developed kinks, cracks, or loose connections from extended use, or if you want to build multiple setups and swap your antifog unit between them quickly.

The goal is zero loose tubing. Any section that isn't anchored will eventually snag, kink, or pull loose at the worst possible moment.


Common Setup Mistakes to Avoid

  • Tubing too long: Cut your tubing to the shortest length that allows your routing path without tension. Excess tubing creates bowing that can snag and kink.
  • Mounting the unit too high: The unit should sit low on the rear of your helmet or head, not at the crown. High mounting shifts your center of gravity and makes the unit more likely to catch on things.
  • Skipping the anchor points: Unanchored tubing will shift during play and eventually pull loose from your eyewear connection. Anchor every direction change.
  • Running max speed all day: You'll drain the battery faster than necessary. Match speed to conditions.
  • Not testing before game day: Run the full setup at home first. Put your kit on, move around, check that tubing doesn't pull tight when you turn your head or raise your rifle. Fix issues at home, not at the field.
